By BBN Staff: A group of Belizean journalists were in Mexico this week meeting with Former Mexican advisor at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Carlos Bernal.
The trip is a part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ICJ education campaign.
The United States Embassy in Belize is supporting the education campaign.
In an interview with media personnel yesterday, Bernal explained that he believes that Guatemala has very little rights over its claim on Belize’s territory.
Bernal further recommended that Belize take the claim to the ICJ for final settlement explaining that two countries cannot live with disputes and controversy and it is better to settle the issues.
On April 10, 2019, Belizeans will go to the polls to vote in favor of or against taking Guatemala’s long-standing claim on Belize’s continental, insular and maritime territory to the ICJ.
The decision taken at the ICJ is final and cannot be appealed.
The group of journalists will go to the Hague, Netherlands in November to meet with legal experts and learn more about the overall function of the court and the legal system of the ICJ.
After the trip to the ICJ, the journalists will travel to Guatemala to explore the opinions and views of Guatemalans on the issue.
