Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2018. 9:23 am CST.

By BBN Staff:Yesterday, John Briceno, the Leader of the People’s United Party (PUP) released his weekly video address.

In his address, he focused on cannabis and called for the legalization of the drug in Belize. He said that if done properly, the marijuana industry can benefit the country economically.

Briceno mentioned other countries like Canada, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Uruguay that have legalized marijuana for recreational use.

“32 countries worldwide already have some legalized form of marijuana use. This is big news for it provides an opportunity for the creation of a new industry in Belize,” Briceno explained.

Briceno further added that by legalizing marijuana, it will contribute to growing the Belizean economy and will take the drug out of the black market.

“Just think of what the harvesting of legal marijuana could do for our small farmers. As a leader in this country I want to grow and build on our mixed economy model and if we could become a part of this rapidly growing industry; if through this we can create sustainable jobs for our people then I want to partner with legitimate stakeholder,” Briceno stated.

Briceno also informed that a team from the PUP is beginning to research on how the legalization of cannabis can benefit Belize and they will soon commence a discussion about it.
