In the events leading up to the referendum date, the Government of Belize has embarked on a countrywide ICJ education campaign.
The United States Embassy in Belize is supporting the Government of Belize’s ICJ education campaign.
Next month, a team of Belizean journalists is scheduled to travel to the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands to learn more about the overall role and functions of the court.
Breaking Belize News Journalist Zoila Palma Gonzalez is a part of the delegation and over the weekend, she met with Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico, Ambassador Oliver del Cid in Mexico City.
Ambassador del Cid applauded the initiative and said that Belizeans must be informed so that they can vote in the upcoming referendum.
“It is very important for Belizeans to be able to make an informed decision. Belizeans need to know the facts about the ICJ and about the composition of the court, the cases they have ruled on and the whole process so that they can then vote in the referendum. We must note that the judges at this International court are professionals with deep knowledge and understanding of International Law and International relations…. so it is important that Journalists are really going to the court and learning about the whole process to properly inform Belizeans on your return. ”
“From Fear to Facts: Demystifying the ICJ to Belizeans,” is the theme of the journalists trip to the Netherlands.
The goal is for journalists to return to Belize and have the ability to properly inform Belizeans on the procedures of the ICJ.
