Posted: Monday, October 29, 2018. 5:07 pm CST.

BBN Staff: A Dangriga man was shot over the weekend and his shooter has been confirmed as a police officer.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, sometime around 4 a.m. on Saturday, police were conducting a mobile patrol when they encountered John Elijio, 39.

Elijio was riding a bicycle when police approached him and asked to conduct a search.

However, he refused arrest and a struggle ensued between him and the officers.

During that struggle, he made an attempt to put his right hand in his waist as if he was drawing for a weapon.

At that point, officers fired a shot which hit him in his left upper leg.

Thereafter officers conducted a search which led to the discovery of an unlicensed firearm.

Elijio was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

At this time he remains detained pending police investigations.
