By BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow today stated that the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno had privately requested a change of date for Belize’s National Referendum which will ask Belizeans to vote in favor of or against taking Guatemala’s long-standing claim on Belize’s continental, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Barrow says that he sees no reason to further the date since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is proceeding with the countrywide ICJ education campaign to provide all the facts to Belizeans.
Barrow also referred to Assad Shoman’s book, “ Guatemala’s claim to Belize, The Definitive History”.
He stated that the public is being informed and educated on the history of the claim.
The referendum is scheduled for April 10, 2019.
