Accused kidnapper caught in Belize stands trial in Canada

Posted: Friday, November 2, 2018. 8:19 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Today was the first hearing of a kidnapping case in Canada, where the accused was arrested in Belize.

The woman, whose name was kept hidden because the case involves a minor, stands accused of taking her 11-month-old son without the consent of his father (her ex-husband) out of Canada and staying on the run for three years.

Canadian media says that three Belizean officers testified via teleconference today, explaining that the woman was arrested in Cayo, after the department learned that she was wanted. Belize assisted with the woman’s extradition to Canada, despite the countries not having an extradition treaty.

The woman also testified in her defense, saying that she was removed from Belize without due process and was not allowed to seek legal representation.

She is scheduled to reappear in court on December 14.

The alleged kidnapping reportedly happened in 2014, with people in several Central American countries claiming to have seen the woman while she was on the run. She was found in San Ignacio last year.
