No space for Samuel August Sr. at psychiatric facility

Posted: Saturday, November 3, 2018. 6:37 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Samuel August Sr., the man accused of ramming a backhoe into the home of his children’s maternal grandmother, Louise Young and killing her and one of his own sons on the early morning of October 31, 2018, was to be admitted to a psychiatric facility in Belmopan this past week; however, there were no spaces for him at the facility.

After the tragedy on October 31st, 2018, August Sr. was interned under police guard at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), but yesterday, he escaped from the hospital, stole a vehicle, and drove it into a backhoe. He then stabbed himself several times before police arrived at the scene where the incident occurred.

August is now back at the KHMH under police guard.

According to authorities, a psychiatric evaluation has been conducted on August.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams stated that the evaluation concluded that August is suffering from a psychiatric problem and he was to be admitted to the Palm Center in Belmopan.

“ I know from what I have been briefed, the psychiatrist has concluded, preliminary, that he is suffering from some psychiatric problem and he was to be admitted to the place in Belmopan. However, there was no space there for him so he was kept at the K.H.M.H. until space could be obtained or he overcomes the difficulty that he was going through,” Williams said.

August Sr. case file will now be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for a further directive.
