BNTU to hold national demonstration tomorrow

Posted: Tuesday, November 6, 2018. 10:07 am CST.

BBN Staff: Teachers are preparing for a national demonstration to be held tomorrow at the foot of the National Assembly in Belmopan city.

The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) announced their decision to protest with the goal to send a message to the Government of Belize for remarks made by Minister of Education Patrick Faber, which the union maintains are completely untrue.

In a press conference last week, BNTU President Elena Smith stated that Faber continues to spread untruths about the ongoing negotiations for hardship allowance for teachers in remote areas and that the ministry is disrespecting the union by telling them to meet with district education managers instead of the Minister and his team.

Smith said that Faber’s repeated disrespect of the union will not go unchecked, and the union is preparing to send a strong message.

“This is to show them that we will no longer tolerate their disrespect. We will no longer tolerate their union busting and we want to ensure that our members are heard so they can get what they deserve,” Smith said.

She noted that the demonstration is only the beginning and that the union is prepared to go as far as it needs to for the sake of its members.
