By BBN Staff: Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, today issued a statement following the murder of police officer Osbourne Martinez.
“We at the Ministry of National Security are deeply saddened at the news that Officer Osbourne Martinez has passed away after being shot while responding to calls for assistance at an armed robbery incident. We offer our deepest condolences to the Belize Police Department and to Officer Martinez’s parents, Mrs. Dellis Yvonne Martinez and Mr. Bert Martinez, his children and other family members. The death of any law enforcement officer is a tragedy for the community they serve,” Saldivar said.
Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie lauded Martinez as an exemplary officer, who was deeply involved in the community and as a member of the Department’s Addressing Crime Together (ACT) Operation. He had been with the department for eleven years.
“The details of Martinez’s death remind us of the danger and uncertainty that all police officers face as they work to protect our communities. Responding to a citizen call for assistance is often a straight forward task, but it is one that is often fraught with potential violence that can occur without warning,” the statement added.
The Ministry of National Security honors all law enforcement officers who put their own safety at risk to ensure the safety of our communities.
The Ministry urged everyone to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice that was made by Osbourne Martinez in the line of duty.
