Utilities Union extends support to BNTU

Posted: Wednesday, November 7, 2018. 5:52 am CST.

BBN Staff: The Utilities Union have issued a statement expressing their support for the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) protest in Belmopan today.

The BNTU is scheduled to hold a national demonstration this morning at the foot of the National Assembly in Belmopan City.

The purpose of the rally is to send a message to the Government of Belize, protesting the categorization of hardship allowance, and to keep Proposal 22 as a live discussion with the Ministry of Education.

In their statement, the Utilities Workers Unions said: “We are convinced that the BNTU’s struggles, are aimed at addressing equity within the teaching sector of our country, and as trade unionists, their call for support in addressing this matter is one we simply cannot and will not ignore.”

The Utilities Union also indicated to the BNTU to avoid the ‘escalated’ use of industrial action unless it becomes absolutely necessary, and further added that these issues can be addressed and bring to an end the long ten year period of negotiations.
