Faber: BNTU demonstration ‘unnecessary’

Posted: Thursday, November 8, 2018. 1:28 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, yesterday commented on the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) demonstration that was held in Belmopan city.

The BNTU and the Ministry of Education had been engaged in negotiations for Proposal 22 and the re-categorization of hardship allowances for teachers.

However, Faber made several public comments warning the BNTU that the government is the government to lead and they can make decisions on education in Belize. Faber went on to state that it is out of courtesy that the Ministry consults the BNTU.

The union also noted that the agreed meeting dates of September 25 and October 2 regarding Proposal 22 went without being addressed by Faber.

Faber yesterday told the media that disgruntlement by the union is ‘common’.

Faber  clarified that his team engages in negotiations, “It is my senior management team that engages those people on a regular basis”.

He also stated that the demonstration is ‘unnecessary’ because the discussions have not arrived at an impasse point.

Additionally, he informed that to his view, the majority of discussions for Proposal 22 had been concluded.

Faber has invited the union to a meeting on Monday, November 12.
