By: BBN Staff: Belizean Senators, Osmany Salas, and Mark Lizarraga yesterday visited the Gracias a Dios border monument.
The senators were accompanied by Wil Maheia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV).
This morning Maheia shared a video with the media that shows the group being escorted by the Belizean Law Enforcement Authorities as well as Guatemalan Armed Forces.
” They followed us all the way up and waited until we finished our expedition. In this video, the Guatemala armed forces clearly was in Belize territory on the north side of the island,” Maheia said.
Earlier this year, 24% of the Guatemalan electorate participated in their national referendum to take Guatemala’s longstanding claim on Belize’s land, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice.
Of the 24 %, 95% voted yes.
On April 10, 2019, Belizeans will be asked to vote in favor of or against taking Guatemala’s longstanding claim on Belize’s land, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice.
