SMART donates to BERT for CPR project

Posted: Wednesday, November 14, 2018. 3:30 pm CST.

BBN Staff: SMART gave its support to the Belize Emergency Response Team’s (BERT) “Hands Only CPR” initiative this week, through a donation of $6,000.

Through the project, BERT is teaching primary school students the basics of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to manage certain levels of emergencies until professional help arrives. SMART’s Public Relations Officer, Adelaide Sabido, presented the donation to BERT’s Executive Director, Andre Carrillo, at the BERT headquarters in Belize city yesterday.

Sabio said that the company often extends its support to education and health initiatives and felt that BERT’s initiative was one that needed the support. She noted that the donation is only a start to the partnership between SMART and BERT.

Carillo said that, through the programme, BERT trained over 3,000 students from three districts during CPR Month, which was celebrated in September.

“According to global statistics researched by AHA, only 8% of patients suffering cardiac arrest outside a hospital get CPR help immediately from a bystander. AHA then wants to improve that statistic by getting more people trained. A bystander doing CPR immediately when someone suffers a cardiac arrest can increase that person’s chance of survival 2-3 times,” Carrillo said.

The first set of training sessions were done in the Corozal, Orange Walk and the Belize districts. BERT will resume offering the training in schools countrywide, including the cayes, in December.
