By BBN Staff: In an effort to increase public confidence and efficiently address complaints of police abuse and excessive use of force, the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar has established a Civilian Complaint Review Committee.
The Chairman of the committee will be former Commissioner of Police, Gerald Westby while the administrative secretary will be Ida Herrera.
The members of the committee will include , Baldemar Hiram Gomez of Orange Walk, Martin Griffith of Belize City, Rafael Marin from Cayo, Sarita Kerr from Stann Creek, Ian Glory from Corozal and Celia Mahung from Toledo.
Each member will have their own offices in their respective district, separate from the police station.
According to Minister Saldivar, this committee will not replace the Police Department’s Professional Standards Branch. It will merely provide more oversight.
However, the head of the Professional Standards Branch will be required to meet with the chairman of the committee, the Commissioner of Police and the Minister himself on a monthly basis to review the complaints against the department.
