Mount Carmel teachers to hold demonstration today

Posted: Friday, November 23, 2018. 7:18 am CST.

BBN Staff: Teachers from Mount Carmel primary school have obtained a permit to demonstrate in the streets of Benque Viejo del Carmen today.

The teachers have been staging a sit-out since Wednesday. They are standing up demanding that the salaries that have been delayed from September and October be paid and also are unhappy with the attempted removal of a long-time teacher.

The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has sent a letter to Chief  Education Officer, Dr. Carol Babb detailing the issues.

BNTU’s President, Elena Smith, says that Babb promised to look at the issues and is in communication with the school’s management to get it resolved.

Furthermore, Smith says that Education Minister Patrick Faber informed that the Ministry is looking at placing a specific person inside the Teaching Services Commission to deal with these cases so that teachers can have direct contact to get the information they need.
