By BBN Staff:Prime Minister Dean Barrow spoke on the Sanctuary real estate fraud scandal which is being investigated in the United States by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) following his meeting with the Public Service Union yesterday.
Barrow said he would say much on the matter because he had discussed it with the Central Bank and they agree that the matter is very delicate. The Prime Minister was also asked about his law firm, Barrow & Williams, which was listed in an FTC court filing as one of the law firms the Sanctuary Bay co-conspirators used to access various legal services.
“…One of the companies was incorporated; the legal work of incorporation was done by Barrow and Williams. My God man, that’s what lawyers do every single day. If there had been any suggestion that Barrow and Williams was somehow involved in the operations of these companies and what the federal agency describes as the scheme, that would have been a different matter,” Barrow told the media. The Prime Minister added he was unconcerned about the matter.
The FTC investigation has seen Atlantic International Bank and a Belizean citizen named as defendants in the case along with a number of other individuals and entities. Barrow also said he does not believe the case will have any effect on Belize’s financial sector.
