Concerns of question Belizeans will answer in April

BBN Staff: Belizeans have expressed concern about the formulation of the question that Belizeans will answer to on April 10, 2019.

Belize and Guatemala in 2008 signed a Special Agreement that lists the question that both countries agreed for their residents to answer.

“ Do you agree that any legal claim of Guatemala against Belize relating to land and insular territories and to any maritime areas pertaining to these territories should be submitted to the International Court of Justice for final settlement and that it determine finally the boundaries of the respective territories and areas of the Parties?”

Journalists today asked Belize’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, Dylan Vernon to explain more, “ The question is phrased in such a way as to get Guatemala to put all its claim there so once the court rules, we can be clear that – that is the end of it.”

With relation to litigation risks, Vernon said that the people who are proposing that Belizeans vote ‘Yes’ to the ICJ, are people of both parties of government that believe that Belize’s case is a solid one and that it would be inconceivable that Belize would consider losing anything of what we already have.
