By BBN Staff: The Ministry of National Security yesterday updated the public via a statement on the medical condition of Private Fidel Williams who was involved in a terrible incident on November 14, 2018, at the Sarstoon Forward Operating Base in Southern Belize.

According to the statement, Williams had a surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and one of his eyes was removed and kept under observation by an Ophthalmologist after which he was transferred to the Force’s Medical Center in Ladyville.

Private Williams departed yesterday, November 29, 2018 to Clinica De Merida, Mexico where he will undergo an assessment for a prosthetic eye replacement.

According to the statement, his appointment is scheduled for today, Friday November 30,  2018.

The Belize Defence Force says that it normally sends its soldiers to the most suitable medical facility that offers the required treatment and, in this case, Clinica De Merida agreed to provide this service at the earliest.

Private  Williams will be accompanied by a Combat Medic from the Force Hospital and will return over the weekend.

The ministry says that contrary to what has been circulating on social media, Private Williams has never been asked to resign from the Belize Defence Force and he will continue to serve as a soldier.

The Belize Defence Force Benevolent Fund makes provision for compensation to Private Williams for the loss of his eye.

The Ministry of National Security says that at this time, Private Williams is in high spirit despite this unfortunate incident.
