GOB has insisted it is unable to make the payment, which it says would leave the country’s economy in bad shape. Financial Secretary Joseph Waight appeared in court today and answered questions from Belize Bank’s attorney Eamon Courtenay. Waight told the court that the UHS matter could be resolved if both parties had agreed to installment payments but said the matter had not been discussed with the Minister of Finance, Dean Barrow.
Courtenay noted that the bank had made an offer to the government already to pay in installments but GOB has yet to respond to the offer. Waight was instructed to take up the matter with the Minister of Finance and provide a response to the court.
The case continues tomorrow in the Supreme Court. Earlier this year, Parliament voted against a motion to pay the $90 million UHS award, which was signed by the previous People’s United Party administration.
