Morales was asked to comment on the matter of official maps used by the Guatemalan Government that include Belize as part of their territory.
Morales stated that Guatemala will continue using those maps until the International Court of Justice (ICJ) define the borders of Belize.
“We still have Belize as part of Guatemala’s territory in our maps and we will include it in our maps until the International Court of Justice defines the borders between both countries. It is a matter of a legal situation. I don’t know exactly what map is used in the Ministry of Education in Guatemala at this moment but if they are using the map that includes Belize as part of our territory it is because the law order that and we need to respect the law.”
Morales further reiterated that both Belize and Guatemala need to find a permanent solution to the territorial claim because the issue has been creating confrontations between the countries.
“This is why it is important to go to the ICJ… so when the ICJ give us the order and says, well this is Belize, we need to reform our maps and reform everything in Guatemala….. There is a bilateral differendum that we need to find a solution for.”
“ We agreed in 1991 when we recognized Belize -, we agreed that until we resolve the claim, we agreed that Guatemala will respect the territory until the ICJ define the borders,” Morales asserted.Belize will have a referendum next year in April where it will ask its citizens if they want to take the territorial dispute with Guatemala to the ICJ for a final resolution.
