Belize and Guatemala agree on Arenal entrance?

y BBN Staff: After three days in Guatemala city getting insights from Guatemalans officials and experts on the issue of taking Guatemala’s long-standing claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement,journalists returned home today.

On their way home, members of the media visited the Guatemalan consulate in Benque Viejo del Carmen to find out more about Belize-Guatemala collaborations, especially along the Adjacency Zone.

Guatemalan Consul in Belize, Edgar Chan has been at that post for 5 years and he says that he has a good relationship with Belizean officials from Foreign Affairs and security personnel.

During the interview, Chan said that Guatemala and Belize have an agreement on making access for Guatemalans in Arenal (on the Guatemalan side)to enter through Belize.

“We have our Arenal community that is stick on to the Belize Arenal, Arenal Guatemala and Arenal Belize but the access through the Guatemalan side of the Arenal is no longer there after the bridge was washed away and we stayed without access. The only option was to exit through Belize.It is a coordination that we did with the Belize Immigration Department,” Chan said.

With relation to Guatemala’s claim to Belize and the referendum, Chan said that it is a political matter and he does not have the authorization to speak on it.
