Guatemalan government withdraws accreditation of 11 CICIG workers

Posted: Wednesday, December 19, 2018. 4:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Guatemalan government withdrew accreditation credentials that grant immunity to 11 workers of the Anti Corruption commission(CICIG).

Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rendered the accreditation null and void. The announcement was made this morning in the Government’s official Gazette.

The country’s Foreign Affairs ministry says that these individuals will “no longer enjoy the privileges and immunities that corresponded to them in such qualities.”

Among the 11 officials are two that investigated President Jimmy Morales’ son and brother.

CICIG  has responded saying that the decision will affect the independence of the commission’s work against illegal bodies and clandestine security apparatuses.

Furthermore, CICIG clarified that the information in the Government’s Gazette has notbeen announced to CICIG  through the corresponding diplomatic channels.

The CICIG creation agreement establishes that only the Commissioner can withdraw the immunity of the officials.
