By BBN Staff: Today, in an official Gazette from the Guatemalan government, it was confirmed by that country’s Immigration Control that 11 investigators from the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala ( CICIG) have 72 hours to leave the country.

The CICIG is a United Nations international anti-corruption body charged with investigating and prosecuting people involved in illicit activities in Guatemala.

The department explained that the Government had ordered that 11 researchers from CICIG leave the country. If the researchers fail to do so, they will be expelled from Guatemala.

Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs today informed the researchers that their credentials were null and void and the ministry revoked their ID cards.

“From this date of the revocation and denial of their visas, they stopped enjoying their privileges and immunities that in such qualities corresponded to them,” statement from the Ministry says.

Many Guatemalan organizations have publicly voiced their support in favor of CICIG.
