Yesterday, Guatemalan consul in Belize, Edgar Chan told Belizean journalists that Guatemalans living in Belize make up 5% of Belize’s population.
“We have approximately one thousand five hundred Guatemalan persons living in Benque Veijo and San Ignacio. And in the rest of the country, we have about two thousand Guatemalans living in Dangriga. We have about five percent of the population of Belize,” Chan stated.
Chan said that the official numbers are filed at the Belize’s Immigration Department.
Chan also said that about 400 Guatemalans cross the border daily to come to Belize to work.
According to Chan, 700 Guatemalan students cross the border daily to come to Belize to study in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
“The topic of students that go from Melchor to Benque daily, about 700 students, primary and basic education,” Chan asserted.
Chan told the media that his own children study in Belize because of the advantage of learning English and the quality of primary school education.
