Police officer ambushed, killed in Punta Gorda

By BBN Staff: Authorities are investigating the murder of a police officer in Punta Gorda (PG), Southern Belize.

According to reports, around 11:25 yesterday morning, police were called to an area about ¼ mile on Crique Jute Village Road in PG.

When they arrived at the scene, they saw a pickup truck parked on the side of the road and the body of a man was lying on the ground near some bushes.

The body had gunshot wounds to right side of the face, neck, upper right arm, and chest.

The victim was identified as Modesto Cucul,35, a police officer of San Roman Village.

Investigation revealed that Cucul was driving the vehicle and his wife, Anlavidia Cal was with him.

Two masked men then ambushed the couple and one of the men fired several shots at them killing Cucul and injuring Cal.

Cal was transported to the San Antonio Poly Clinic for treatment and later to Punta Gorda Town Hospital where she was admitted in a stable condition.

The body of Cucul was transported to Punta Gorda Morgue where he was pronounced dead.

Cucul was attached to the Belmopan Police Station. He leaves behind three children.
