Andrew Bennett extradition case gets date for oral arguments

y BBN Staff: Belizean attorney, Andrew Bennett, who is wanted in the US district of Puerto Rico on money laundering charges, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court last week with representation from his attorney Anthony Sylvestre and a January 9 date was set for oral arguments to be heard.

Bennett was released on bail following his arraignment on the charges stemming from the US extradition request. News of Bennett’s case broke in January and has proceeded through the judicial system slowly since then. According to the US request, Bennett’s alleged activities in Puerto Rico took place in 2015.

Sylvestre and Belize’s Office of the Solicitor General, representing the US case, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser last Thursday. Sylvestre indicated to the Chief Magistrate that he had objections to the US file, including the “bundle of evidence” US authorities claim validate their extradition request.

In light of this objection, the Office of the Solicitor General was given an extension to make their written submissions, which were due by December 28. Both sides are due back in court on January 9, when oral arguments on the case will be heard.
