John Briceno: Government is unable to develop plan to reduce crime

Posted: Thursday, January 3, 2019. 3:22 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Belizeans ended the year 2018 with a record of 144 murders countrywide.

In his New Year’s address, Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno lambasted the Government for being unable to find a plan to reduce the crime situation.

It is apparent that our government has no real solution to solving crime. Nowhere was this more evident than in September when the UDP declared a state of emergency on the people of South Side Belize City, which did not result in any lasting peace,” Briceno asserted.

Furthermore, Briceno said that while Belizeans continue to believe in the rule of law, our confidence continues to be eroded by a UDP administration that has been unable to secure convictions.

“Unable to stem the increasing number of drug planes landing all over the country and unable to develop a long term plan to reduce crime,” he added.

Within the violent year, Belize also recorded a number of missing people, violence against women and children.

Briceno said that there are too many Belizean women living in abusive relationships and too many died violent deaths in 2018.

“The People’s United Party (PUP) condemns violence against women and children and said that a compassionate government cannot overlook these social ills for it is leading us on a fast track to a culture of barbarism,” he added.
