Security guard fakes robbery at Western Gas Company

By BBN Staff: Police are investigating a fake robbery that occurred on December 31, 2018, at Western Gas in Santa Elena, Cayo.

Israel Baldera,19, a watchman and gas attendant at Western Gas called authorities to report that around 11:30 p.m., he was walking to the gate of the compound when he saw a black car entering the compound.

According to Baldera, two masked men exited the car and asked him for money. Baldera reportedly handed over the money he had in his pocket.

However, police investigation revealed that he concocted the report.

The investigation also revealed that around 8 pm, a taxi driver known to Baldera purchased gas and agreed that he would return at 11:30 p.m. and Baldera would hand over the money and pretend that he was robbed. The taxi driver returned and as agreed, the transaction was completed.  Thereafter, Baldera ran into the wall of the building and hit his forehead.

A total of  $2,014.61 was stolen belonging to Western Gas Limited.

Baldera was arrested and charged with theft and mischievous act for making a false report.

He was arraigned at the San Ignacio Magistrate Court today and pled guilty to the charges.

He was fined $2,000.00 for the crime of theft plus $5.00 cost of court to be paid by December 30, 2019, in default (1) year imprisonment.

He was also fined $200.00 for the offense of mischievous act plus $5.00 cost of court to be paid by December 30, 2019 in default (2) months imprisonment.
