Bar Association condemns excessive use of police force

Posted: Friday, January 4, 2019. 6:03 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Bar Association of Belize today issued a statement condemning the excessive use of force by police officers in San Pedro.

On Tuesday night, a video went viral depicting two police officers beating some individuals in San Pedro.

The Bar Association says that the video depicts a ‘heinous’, ‘unjustifiable’ and possible life threatening use of violence against an individual who in no way resisted arrest.

The Bar joins other advocacy groups and denounces this and other instances of police brutality and other abuses of power by agents of the state.

“The Bar expects that the department and other relevant authorities will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation of the incident so that any and all warranted actions may be taken against any perpetrators of unlawful action,” the statement asserts.

Furthermore, the Bar says that it considers the implementation of such actions to be swift to ensure continued public confidence in the Belize Police Department.
