Posted: Monday, January 7, 2019. 8:38 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The United States Department of State, on January 4, 2019 issued a travel advisory for Americans planning to travel to Belize.

The level 2 travel advisory advises Americans to exercise increased caution in Belize due to crime.

The advisory notes that violent crimes such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies and murder are common even during the day and in tourist areas.

The advisory also noted that a lot of violent crimes are gang-related.

“Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted,” the advisory says.

American citizens are advised to be aware of their surroundings, to not display any signs of wealth and avoid walking and driving at night in Belize.
