Belizean politicians unite for ‘Yes’ to ICJ joint declaration

BBN Staff: A group of Belizean politicians; five former Foreign Affairs Ministers including immediate former Prime Minister of Belize, Said Musa, and Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow are today signing a joint declaration in favor of taking Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

The politicians are informing the nation of Belize of their collective position on taking the claim to the ICJ to find a final solution to Guatemala’s claim.

Ambassador Dylan Vernon, Belize’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and Belize’s representative at the European Union (EU) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the moderator for the signing ceremony.

Among the Former Foreign Ministers are Assad Shoman, Godfrey Smith and Lisa Shoman.

Also present at the signing is Present Foreign Affairs Minister, Wilfred Elrington.

Lisa Shoman is currently reading the declaration. She says that the only legitimate way to get Guatemala to recognize Belize’s border is through a ruling at the ICJ.
