Garry Yearwood granted bail

Posted: Wednesday, January 9, 2019. 9:32 am CST.

BBN Staff: Garry Yearwood, the brother of police inspector Fitzroy Yearwood who was arrested last week for an alleged assault, was granted bail yesterday after his attorney made an application to the court on grounds of urgency.

According to his attorney, his bail was a matter of urgency due to his diabetes and because he is the sole provider for his two children. His lawyer also argued that the police evidence against Yearwood was not strong enough. Police reportedly took only a statement from Yearwood’s ex, who lodged the complaint against him but did not take a statement from the ex’s mother and sister who were both present at the time as well.

Yearwood was detained last week after his exclaimed that he had assaulted her by pulling his licensed firearm at her. The story was complicated by the fact that in her statement she acknowledged following Yearwood home to his property after seeing him with another woman. She reportedly followed him a distance of 14 miles and then slapped him, which is when she claims he pulled out the gun.

Fitzroy Yearwood, who spoke with the media this week, said he believes his brother was targeted because of his status as ‘persona non-grata’ within the police department. Yearwood said his brother was treated unfairly but said he understood that he was being targeted because they could not get to him
