Minister Dean Barrow touched down in Havana, Cuba yesterday morning.Barrow is on a 3-day working visit to Cuba on an invitation from Cuba’s President, Miguel Diaz Canel.
His visit began yesterday with an homage ceremony to honor Cuban patriot, José Martí.
Martí was a poet, essayist, patriot and martyr, who became the symbol of Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain.
Martí organized and unified the movement for Cuban independence and died on the battlefield fighting for it. As a writer, he was distinguished for his personal prose and deceptively simple, sincere verse on themes of a free and united America.
Barrow paid tribute to the Cuban patriot at his marble statue in Cuba.
In an interview with Cuban media, Barrow assured that the meetings in Cuba will be to analyze and discuss important issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Belize and Cuba share friendly diplomatic relations with Belizeans studying at Cuban universities and medical cooperation between the two countries.
The Cuban brigade operates throughout Belize providing medical consultations.
Cuba and Belize also cooperate on sporting activities.
In November of 2018, on the anniversary of his death, the Government of Belize paid tribute to Cuba’s Former Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro.
“Fidel’s legacy will be eternal because he dedicated his life to the struggle for the most vulnerable on Earth,” Barrow said.
