By BBN Staff: Veteran police officer and attorney at law, Chester Williams, was yesterday officially installed as the thirteenth Commissioner of Police of Belize.
At the handing over ceremony, his predecessor, Allen Whylie took aim at colleagues of the Belize Police Department, members of the Opposition, and the media for what he refers to as ‘sustained’ attacks against him.
Whylie informed that he was forced to retire with immediate effect on January 8, 2019.
“Over the last two years I have experienced firsthand where there was an organized, sustained, coordinated and systematic attacks against myself as the Commissioner of Police via social media by persons who did not know me personally. Attacks were also made by influential members of the opposition and also by some sectors of the media,” Whylie said.
But, Whylie also sent a message to those members of the Police Department that he thinks may be ‘cheering’ for having him removed as COMPOL.
“I can say without a doubt to those persons who were part of the campaign to get me replaced or fired that you have not broken me. You have not taken anything away from me. I am still the same humble person who says what he means and means what he says, whose words is his bond. A principled person who believes in the rule of law and who executed his duty impartially, without fear or favor, without being influenced by politics or supposedly public sentiments,” he asserted.
Whylie served as Belize’s Commissioner of Police for 6 years.
