By BBN Staff: According to a report from the Amandala Newspaper, Paulette Elrington, daughter of Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, who is a contract officer in her father’s ministry, has applied for a study leave to attend a Certificate in Legal Education (CLE) course at the University of the West Indies with full salary, nearly $200,000 annually, a perk normally reserved only for ‘permanent established staff’.
Furthermore, according to the Memorandum referenced by the Amandala, the Ministry’s CEO has sought advice from the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Public Service and the Financial Secretary because the ministry intends to hire a replacement to fill in for Elrington while she takes her leave, but the replacement would need to collect the same amount in salary, $191,728, while Elrington also collects the same salary while on leave. Elrington holds an LLB degree from the University of Guyana, and LLM from the University of Miami and a Master’s of Law in Legislative Drafting.
According to the Memo, Elrington was posted at the Permanent Mission of Belize to the United Nation’s in New York city. Her salary there included perks such as housing allowance – US $4,700 per month; utilities – US $200 per month; furniture allowance – US $625 per months; transport allowance – US $200 per month; and child education allowance – US $5,000 per annum. The memo also stated that Elrington intends to convert her status with the ministry from contract officer to permanent established staff.
“Please note that the Head of Mission is inclined to support Ms. Elrington‘s request, but would require an immediate replacement that would cost the government of Belize approximately the equivalent of her remuneration package, since she would be replaced by a seasoned officer,” Amandala quoted the memorandum as saying. The study leave is supposed to be from January 2019 to June 2020.
