Belize featured as top “voluntourism” destination

By BBN Staff: For many travelers, getting away to an exotic destination on a nice lazy vacation is enough, however, more and more travelers are looking for experiences to leave them feeling fulfilled. With this growing wave, ‘voluntourism’, as it is being called, has started attracting visitors to Belize, according to an article by the UK’s Daily Mail. Other holiday planners are also offering short vacation breaks based around charitable works.

Oceanic Society, a California-based non-profit organization dedicated to marine conservation, is currently offering a family vacation package which includes tracking and tagging dolphins, manatees and sea turtles in Belize’s colorful reef. The package includes a week-long stay on Belize’s historic St. George’s caye. The trips are led by a marine biologist and vacationers will spend much of their time snorkeling Belize’s world renowned reef.

According to the site, anyone able to swim can part-take in the vacation activities. Children older than 10 can also take part in the snorkeling activities. Ocean Society offers week-long family packages starting from US $1800.

Other voluntourism packages noted by the Daily Mail include a mission to save a canal in the UK, teaching English to Monks in Laos, coaching a children’s football team in Brazil, rescuing injured lions in Namibia, protecting rare sea turtles in Greece, and tracking wolves in Slovakia.
