The mock referendum was held last week Friday.
It was conducted as if students were voting in favor of or against taking Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a final settlement.
“This noteworthy effort is testimony to the fact that our nation’s youth are yearning for opportunities to contribute to the national dialogue, so as to impact the decisions that affect their future,” the BPM says.
The BPM congratulate all debaters, who passionately argued their well-researched positions.
“This national issue undoubtedly has the potential to awaken the sleeping giant of patriotism among our population and more significantly, our youth,” the statement added.
The group encourages all high schools and tertiary institutions nationwide, as well as youth-centered organizations, to become actively involved in similar efforts.
