Belizean artists, teachers and community activists stand in solidarity with Cuba

Posted: Tuesday, January 22, 2019. 10:32 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A group of Belizeans; Yasser Musa (artist/teacher), YaYa Marin Coleman (community activist/media worker), Katie Usher (artist/poet), Delmer Tzib (teacher) and Carlos “lito” Quiroz (artist) will be in Havana, Cuba from January 27 to February 1, 2019.

The group will attend the International Conference for the Equilibrium of the World and participate in a series of actions organized by ICAP, the Cuban institute of friendship with the people.

As part of this solidarity encounter, the group will meet with a number of key persons from Cuban educational and cultural institutions including Casa de Las Americas, the Institute for Friendship among people, the Martin Luther King Center and the Network in Defense of Humanity.

“It is our intention to reaffirm to the Cuban representatives, full support of resistance against the almost 60-year-old US blockade, a genocide condemned by the international community at this moment when the Trump administration is taking new actions to deepen the blockade,” a statement from the group says.

The purpose of the visit is also for the presentation of the recently published book, BEMBE VISION: Leadership Notes for the Belizean Classroom and a graphic art exhibition titled Ka’añaar by Lito (Carlos Quiroz) and Falco, a renowned Cuban illustrator to be held at the Pedagogical University in Havana.

The team is grateful to the Embassy of Cuba in Belize and Ambassador Lissette Pérez, who has worked closely with them over the past months to ensure that this educational, cultural and community solidarity could become reality.

The group says that they acknowledge with respect and admiration the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
