ComPol Williams says he hopes to keep murder count below 100

By BBN Staff: Today, during his appearance on Krem’s Wake Up Belize Morning Vibes, Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Chester Williams made a controversial commitment.

He indicated that as ComPol his greatest fight was that against crime. He also said he hopes to keep this year’s murder count to below 100.

His idea is to zero in on domestic issues, night clubs and gang rivalries which have led to the high murder count.

He said that while many may think it is an impossible goal, he does not.

We note that for years the murder count has been well beyond 100.

For 2018, unofficial statistics put the count at 143. In 2017 the murder count was 142. In 2016 there were 138 murders. In 2015 there were 119 murders. In 2014 there were 121 murders.

Records show that the only time the murder count was below 100 was in 2013 when it stood at 99.

However, the previous year broke the murder count record at 145.
