By BBN Staff: On Tuesday, January 22, 2019, the Fisheries Department recovered and confiscated an old derelict gill net in the vicinity of the Bird’s Isle area of Belize City.

The gill net did not have a registration tag as required by law and no fish or any marine animal were found entangled in the net. It was established that the net was set by minors a couple days prior.

The Fisheries Department reminds fisher folks and the public that in accordance with Regulation 17 of the Fisheries Act, 210s of the Subsidiary Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2000-2003:

No beach seine, trap, weir, or stop net shall be set, hauled or otherwise used for the purpose of taking fish at any place situated within a distance of half a mile from any city, township, village, settlement or other inhabited locality in Belize: the boundaries of any community.

In addition to these Principal Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 78 of 2011 provides for the following gill net regulations:

(1) No person shall take fish in the internal waters of Belize by:

(a) using a gill net that is greater than 100 metres in length,

(b) joining gill nets the total length of which exceed 100 metres.

(2) Where one or more canoes are on board a boat, the owner of that boat shall not carry gill nets of a combined length which exceeds 300 metres.

The public is encouraged to contact the Fisheries Department for additional information on gill nets and report any violations of the Gill Net Regulations to the Fisheries Department at telephone numbers 224-4552 or 223-2623.
