2019 murder count almost at double digits

Posted: Sunday, January 27, 2019. 12:47 pm CST.

BBN Staff: With the two murders last night, the unofficial murder count for 2019 rests at nine for the first 27 days of the year.

Last night both Johvanney Tablada, 23, and Michael Williams, 58, were shot and killed in Belize City. They join Jaime Martinez, 23; Preston Reynold Jr., 22; Joseph Babb, 21; Howard Coleman, 58; Anita Pineda, 34; Alfonso Guy, 51; and Edinio Enso Humes, 29, as persons who have lost their lives to violence this year.

All of these murders represent active investigations by the Belize Police Department, and three people have been charged with respect to
three separate incidents. Notably, police say that Martinez was found dead on January 1 but was killed sometime before that. There are also two persons only reported missing in the Humes case.

Five of those murders occurred on New Year’s Day.

Last year, ended with a total of 143 murders, one more than 2017 – numbers which the newly appointed Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says the department will focus on bringing down this year.

Williams said that the department will be putting special emphasis on gangs, domestic violence, and nightclubs as a part of their efforts to
reduce the murder count this year.
