BELVEN condemns attempted coup

Venezuelan President

Posted: Sunday, January 27, 2019. 3:18 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belizean Organization for Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution (BELVEN), issued a statement this week, condemning the attempted coup d’état in Venezuela and the countries that support it.

BELVEN condemned Juan Guaidó for leading the attempted coup, as well as the United States of America, Canada, the European Union and the Organization of American States for supporting that Guaidó be named Interim President of Venezuela.

The organization noted that Guaidó did not run for the presidency and was not duly elected by the people of Venezuela and that the constitution of 1999 does not provide for a person to declare himself president.

“The recent actions by Guaidó, backed by the US, the EU and Canada are in violation of international law and conventions. It is these actions that pose a threat to the wellbeing of the Venezuelan people and to democratic process across Latin America and the Caribbean,” BELVEN said.

The organization also condemned the recent sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the very nations that are supporting the coup, noting that
they have done nothing but harm to the Venezuelan people. BELVEN also pointed out that, as a sister nation, Venezuela has supported Belize with hundreds of millions of dollars in loans through the PetroCaribe arrangement, which has helped to construct roads, hospitals and many other things to the benefit of Belizeans.
