CARICOM to ask UN to aid in Venezuelan crisis

Venezuelan President

Posted: Monday, January 28, 2019. 10:51 am CST.

BBN Staff: Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr. Keith Rowley is the latest to lend his voice to the Caribbean Community’s plea to the United Nations (UN) for urgent assistance in the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

According to T&T news sources, Rowley has joined a CARICOM delegation which is seeking an audience with the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres today.

The move to seek assistance for Venezuela comes after T&T joined Belize, St. Kitts-Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, and Barbados inabstaining from a vote taken at the Organization of American States (OAS) earlier this month to not recognize the second five-year term of Venezuelan President, Nicholas Maduro.

Last Wednesday, Venezuela’s Opposition Leader, Juan Guaidó, declared himself the interim President of Venezuela, usurping the country’s democratic process. Several countries, including the United States, Canada, and countries within the European Union supported his declaration, while countries like Russia and China openly voiced support for Maduro.

His declaration and the subsequent spike in social unrest led the country to believe that he was behind an attempted coup d’état to overthrow the Maduro regime. Over the weekend the Belizean Organization for Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution (BELVEN), issued a statement condemning the attempted coup and the countries that support it.
