By BBN Staff: Belize was selected by the Mississippi Consortium for International Development (MCID) Washington’s Country of the month profile.

Last year, Breaking Belize News Journalist, Zoila Palma Gonzalez participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on Building Digital Literacy and Media responsibility in Democracies in the Digital Age.

MCID Washington highlights Belize and Gonzalez’ experience and achievements as an IVLP alumna.

“Check out our January Country of the Month feature on Belize! We profiled #IVLP alumna Zoila Gonzalez of @belizemedia to hear about her IVLP experience, what she’s done since, and to learn more about her home country,” MCID Washington posted on its social media.

The feature includes a description on Belize as a ‘jewel’ and lists some of Belize’s wealth in natural resources.

It also shares Gonzalez’s IVLP experience on media literacy and her goal of fostering media literacy in Belize.

“Zoila considers her IVLP experience to be invaluable to her career and her goal of fostering media literacy in her country. This objective is especially essential to her due to the upcoming national referendum related to Belize’s major territorial dispute with Guatemala,” the feature notes.

MCID Washington has partnered with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to design and implement the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

MCID Washington is one of several nonprofit National Program Agencies based in Washington, DC that administers the IVLP.

The program, designed to enhance mutual understanding through professional and cultural exchange, brings approximately 5,000 current and emerging leaders in government, politics, civil society, business, media, education, the arts, sciences and other fields to the U.S. each year.
