By BBN Staff: Founded in 2003, Galen University (GU), established itself as Belize’s first independent University by offering Bachelor degree programs in Business Administration, Environmental Science and Tourism Management. Over the past fifteen years, the University has systemically evolved, expanding its program offerings to include a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Currently, the school prepares its students to earn a Master degree in Business Administration and/or Social Science and a Bachelor degree in the following areas: Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Economics, Elementary Education, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, International Business, Marketing and Tourism & Hospitality as well as a Veterinary Technician which is an Associate degree course. (Ask us about our new programs in August 2019!)
These “in-demand” degree programs are delivered online as well as on-campus, in a variety of formats, including traditional or virtual online where students engage in a classroom setting that utilizes Blackboard Collaborate and Moodle platforms. Some programs are hybrid taught which means students get to blend both online and on-campus classes to suit their individual needs. On-campus sessions are only available during the day at the main campus in Central Farm.
The University prides itself in being a dynamic and progressive Institution with a global perspective, reflecting commitment to education, research, and community service. Classes are taught by credentialed professionals with relevant experience who provide students with more than just theories, foundation, and methodologies in their core studies but exposure to “Best Practices” locally, regionally and globally. GU partners with many organizations and institutions, in Belize and globally, to stay in the forefront of current undertaking, studies and proactively disseminates forward-thinking through innovative teaching many employers seek.
According to Galen’s Provost, Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird, “Galen’s unique strengths are realized through careful selection of the most qualified, accomplished professionals from the private, public and social sectors. These professionals; lecturers or professors are recruited locally and from abroad. They caringly nurture and work with each student to help them become well-rounded professionals and contributing citizens who can sustain themselves, successfully.” She continued by saying that, “These engaging interactions have steadfastly transformed and mold our students to support a viable university culture, here at Galen. A culture which students are able to embrace and gain the knowledge and exposure required to maximize their potential, take advantage of their options and excel in any opportunity they choose. We are a small community which allows us to give each student enough attention, challenges and encouragement to enhance their confidence, well-being and human development. Our environment makes it easier for students to identify their shortcomings and overcome them. Simply put, Galen students get to unleash their inner champions.”
Today, Galen University has a Central Farm main campus location in the Cayo District, along with nine Facilitator Centers. These Centers are easily accessible and can be found in Punta Gorda at the Toledo Community College, Belmopan in the Habet Building, Belize City at the Belize Institute of Management, as well as in Orange Walk at Muffles College, Corozal at Centro Escolar Junior College, San Pedro at the San Pedro High School, Caye Caulker at the Roman Catholic Primary School, Dangriga at the Ecumenical Junior College, and last but not least in Independence, at the Independence Junior College.
These Centers are used for testing, studying and accessing the internet or for any other assistance students might need. Each Center is managed by a Facilitator who is always ready to support and assist prospective, past and existing students including accepting documents to send to the right departments in Central Farm. These Facilitators are the liaison as well between the general public and businesses wanting assistance or information from the University.
Besides having a committed staff and a technologically-driven environment, Galen wants everyone to know that they offer a variety of other benefits students enjoy. There are advising and life coach counselling, an active campus life, groups and clubs, e-library, sports, and tutoring. And, most importantly, paying for tuition is now more accessible than ever. The school has several financial aid programs to help students pay for their education including a low-interest bearing loan package, instalment payment plan or a professional work study program. Students also have the option to apply for an academic or athletic scholarship. These scholarships are awarded once a year in August.
If you are contemplating on earning a degree, consider Galen University. The Institution promotes academic excellence, sustainable development and live long learning for a focused you. It has a reputation of serving not only the nation’s needs but also the needs of the global university population.
