By Glenn Tillett: This evening’s conference on domestic violence, spousal abuse, and sexual assault will not be just a pebble thrown in the pond of our cultural complacency on this virulent issue.
It is a first step yes, but a significant one. It is not just a call to conscience but a call to action too.
I am thankful that Mayor Bernard Wagner and the Belize City Council, in particular Councilor Candice Pitts, have put in the effort of transforming the desire of their vision to reality.
No doubt the Mayor and Council were jolted by one of their employees late last year using the Council’s backhoe to kill and wound his family members in a fit of drunken rage, and to subsequently try and kill himself and others.
I cheered when I heard that the Citco would undertake the repair of the family’s home but wondered what other services, we as a community and society should offer, and would be undertaken, to try and restore this family as best as we could. It did cross my mind that we have not only seen a steady increase in murderous violence being done to women and children by men across the nation, but there did not seem to be any concurrent actions by our societal governance institutions to try and eliminate it.
Today’s conference is historic, remarkable and timely. We must recognize that to eliminate and deter the scourge of domestic violence we must eradicate it from our culture. Men, and women, must get the sense. Men, and women, can no longer believe that being male privileges men to a status of dominance and superiority to females.
We must teach, inculcate in our children that females are not to be subservient and deferential to men just because they are female.
It must be taught, and it must be lived, that yes, women have a role in our society that is distinct and different from men, but it is not a role that makes them inferior to men by virtue of their gender. There must be the elimination of the acceptance and tolerance of the cultural sine qua non that men are superior by the simple virtue of their being men.
Women have made tremendous strides in our social and political economy, particularly the past two generations, but obviously, the statistics of the incidence of criminal violence tell a different story. Any cursory examination of that record for the past two (2) decades, especially the last two (2) years, will reveal an increasing litany of women and children being slain and wounded by men.
It has to stop. It must stop. We as men must stop.
