Caribbean moving closer to green economies with phaseout of single-use plastics

BBN Staff: According to the United Nations Environment Program and the World Resources Institute, there are 127 countries worldwide working to phase out the use of single-use plastics because of the harm they do to is being considered in the is entire phase-out process is to identify what would be the most appropriate mechanism for providing some support to private sector entities for investing in the equipment they need to produce biodegradables.

The taskforce representatives all stressed that the initiative will have to be a phased approach to ensure that all the technical details surrounding the phaseout are adequately covered as well as to give the private sector a chance to adjust to the changes.

The NGO community praised the decision to proceed with the phaseout, noting that it will ensure the longevity of Belize’s marine industry, which accounts for the livelihood of thousands of Belizeans and contributes millions of dollars to the economy annually.
