Belizean invents eco-friendly insect repellant

Posted: Friday, February 1, 2019. 7:17 pm CST.

BBN Staff: People suffering from allergic reactions to the chemicals in insect repellents now have an all natural alternative which was invented, bottled and sold right in Belize, by Belizeans.

Beverly Dawson, manager of Back Orchid Resort in Burrell Boom Village, invented the “Bug Off”, an all-natural insect repellant following a fishing trip on the Belize River that ended with her being swarmed by mosquitoes with no protection due to her own allergies to the chemicals in other repellants.

Armed with the knowledge handed down by her grandmother that lemongrass, locally known as “fever grass”, acts as a natural mosquito repellant, Dawson experimented with formulas until she arrived at a mixture of lemongrass, mint leaves, and coconut oil.

“Everything is made with ingredients grown right here at Black Orchid. The lemongrass grows here and my mother harvests the coconut oil right across the river,” Dawson said.

She noted that Bug Off also acts as a skin moisturizer, due to the coconut oil content, and that the product is environmentally friendly, unlike other repellants which are heavily chemical based.

Those wishing to try Bug Off can call  225-9158 for wholesale or retail orders.
