Councilor Dr. Candice Pitts and BCC hold successful conference on domestic abuse

BBN Staff:Many Belizean men and women have been victims of domestic abuse.

However, this reality has been rarely brought to the forefront for discussion and analysis.

On Wednesday evening the Belize City Council tabled the matter for discussion at the Swift Hall in Belize City.

Councilor Dr. Candice Pitts organized the event which saw key presenters from various sectors of society.

The event, the first of its kind, was an overwhelming success.

At the end of it, all the presenters and over two hundred members of the audience signed the “Swift Hall Declaration” which reflected a commitment to the fight against domestic violence.

According to Councilor Dr. Pitts, “The conference on Domestic Violence held at Swift Hall on January 30th, 2019, was not just for people to convene, but for us to show our seriousness in combating and putting an end to domestic violence.”

“We also understand that bipartisan approaches must be taken to meaningfully and effectively address national crises,” she added.

According to her, “Domestic violence is a national crisis.”

After thanking those who signed the declaration she indicated the start of a movement.

“The immediate objective is to do a city-wide tour and ask residents to be signatories of this declaration as well,” she said.
