By BBN Staff: Former Foreign Minister Lisa Shoman had some choice words for the Belize Peace Movement (BPM) today, following the group’s response to her challenge to debate on the issue of taking the territorial dispute with Guatemala to the International Court of Justice.

While the BPM said that there was no need to debate Shoman on the issue because there was already a debate in 2016, she made it known that it wasn’t a request for a debate, but rather an open challenge on a morning talk show. Soman also emphasized that she and her colleagues won the 2016 debate through hard work, preparation, and sound arguments.

She also addressed the groups’ desire to debate Assad Shoman saying, “And if you can’t even spell Assad’s surname right, what hope do you have to beat him? Best you try to engage me.”

Shoman is one of five former foreign ministers who recently signed a declaration of support for taking the territorial dispute to the ICJ.

She has also been engaged in talks and discussions on the matter for years, emphasizing that the court is the best option to see an end to the claim which has plagued both territories for generations.
